New Replacement for Halogen Down Lights
For a true replacement for your old 50 Watt Halogen Lamps try the Brightgreen DR700 Retrofit is. The DR700 will work with most common transformers installed in Australian Homes and Offices ans it is also dimmable “out of the box.”
At 10.56 Watts it uses 79% less power than your 50 Watt halogen lamp. To safeguard against exceptional heat issues, the DR700 has its own on board temperature monitoring, allowing it to automatically dim itself to maintain its target product life and prevent the risk of fire. With a 3 year unconditional warranty and 80% lumen maintenance to 70,000 hours* the Brightgreen DR700 is a remarkable investment.
*(80% of it’s original light output at 70,000 hours – this is 23 years at 8 hours a day usage.)

Many 2012 Mobile Phones to have USB Charging Solution
In 2009 the GSM Association (GSMA) and 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers announced that they are committed to implementing an industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers and the enhancement of the customer experience by simplifying the charging of mobile phones.
The group agreed that by the 1st January 2012, the majority of all new mobile phone models available will support a universal charging connector using Micro-USB as the common universal charging interface and the majority of chargers shipped will meet high efficiency targets.
A universal charger will also make life much simpler for the consumer, who will be able to use the same charger for future handsets, as well as being able to charge their mobile phone anywhere from any available charger. The SockITz power points with USB Charging Ports will be an ideal charging station for the mobile phones.
The initial group of companies who have joined the GSMA’s UCS initiative include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone – some of the world’s largest mobile operators and manufacturers who together are committed to making a universal charging solution a reality up to 2012 and beyond.
sockITz USB Power Point Coming Soon
With more and more devices able to be charged via a USB port there is finally a sensible solution for your home, hotel room or office.
The new sockITz outlet combines an Australian Standard dual 240v power socket with twin USB powered charging outlets for charging mobile devices under the new universal charging guidelines for mobile phones set to come in effect in 2012.
The twin USB powered 5 Volt sockets are perfect for charging current mobile phones, including iphones, ipads, ipods, other mp3 players, GPS navigation devices, cameras etc. No longer do you need those bulky charging transformers that take up too much room on the socket or go missing. With sockITz your device plugs straight into the USB socket on the power point and leaves the two 240V plugs free for your normal home appliances. When not in use the ports are concealed by retractable dust covers.
The sockITz outlet is a direct replacement for the standard Australian single or double power point. It does however require a qualified electrical contractor to install it for you.
The sockITz outlets are environmentally friendly with no phantom leakage that is associated with standard charging transformers. Once the retractable doors closed after charging the power to the port is cut.
Has your household got multiple iphones or ipods? Kids always taking the chargers? Always searching for the charger? Solve the battle and replace a few of your power points with sockITz for the kitchen bench, bedside the bed, in the bathroom or office.
Twin 5V USB outputs. 1x 5V max 1A, 1 x 5V max 2A

ACTEW Chairman Sees The Light
As part of our green focus we have for several years being selling and installing a fantastic LED Down Light called the Ignite. This down light consumes just 8 Watts of power. This means that 7 Ignite LED Down Lights consume less power that a standard low voltage 50 Watt Halogen down light with it’s associated transformer.
In late 2008 we installed some of these lights for a client in Ainslie. This client was sick of the halogen lamps and transformers failing and was looking for an alternative. When we suggested the Ignite they were initially hesitant as they were looking for a cheaper solution. To enable them to make a informed decision on their lighting future AES Technology staff installed both a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) alternative as well as an Ignite LED Down Light. It only took 2 nights for the client to choose the Ignite.
Some 14 months later it is obvious that the client is happy with his Ignites as we recently received the following email;

AES Technology staff have installed several Ignites in John’s home at the time of this post, with the balance to be installed in the near future. When the job is complete we will post some feedback on the Chairman of ACTEW Corporation’s thoughts on the energy efficient Ignite LED Down Light.

Revamped Canberra Electrician Web Site
As a new development we have decided to move our web presence to a WordPress platform. This means we can easily update the site ourselves.
In addition we now have a Blog page so we can talk about some of the interesting electrical issues we have come across.
I would like to thank the team from The WordPress Warrior for their help getting this new format up and running.
